Before I begin to talk about the terror attack that took place today in Oslo, Norway, I would like to send my condolences to those who have been affected due to the attacks.
Norway, the country which was known as a country that is free of terror attacks has sadly become victimized by not one, but two terror attacks earlier today. The first terror attack was a bomb attack targeted one of the government buildings in the center of Norway. This attack resulted in seven dead, and more than 90 wounded. However, this wasn’t the end of the sadness that was to befall on Oslo.
Utoeya is a small camping island just off the coast of Norway, more specifically 20 miles from Oslo. This island was housing hundreds of teenagers for young members of the Norway’s Labour Party, who held an annual youth conference/summer camp. After the bombing of the government building in the center of Oslo, a 32-year old man, dressed up as a policemen arrived at the small island and asked the people on the island to gather to one spot, so he could explain to them about the bombing that occurred in Oslo. As people started to gather, he drew out his weapon and started shooting people and said he was “going to kill you all” and that “we all shall die”. As the he continued to rampage across the small island of Utoeya, it resulted in 87 deaths that have been confirmed. Police say that the death toll will probably rise when they find those who had been shot while they were swimming away from the rampaging gunman.
This 32-year old man, has been identified by the Norwegian media as Anders Behring Breivik, a right-winged Christian fundamentalist who follows the ways of the Ku Klux Klan, hating those who are not ‘white’, and had apparently despised Norway’s multi-cultural society. This man was arrested on the Utoeya island, and is a key suspect in the twin terror attacks. Anders matches a description of a man that was identified before the bombs near the governmental buildings erupted.
Norway, a country once thought to be free of any terrorism has fallen. Is the world capable of living in peace and eliminate terrorism? Fate depends on how the world’s leaders react to such outrageous actions committed by the 32 year old, and what initiatives that they will take.
